Bird paces Wildcats past Vikings

CARIBOU – Fred Bird’s 15-foot jumper with five seconds left Thursday night gave Presque Isle its first and only lead of the game as the Wildcats rallied to sweep the season series between the two archrivals with a 38-37 boys basketball victory.

Caribou missed a 1-and-1 with eight seconds left and then a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Bird and Greg Whittaker each scored 11 points to pace Presque Isle.

Jon Chasse and Kurt Peterson each scored eight for the Vikings.

Jake King led MDI with 18 points and Jones had 13.

Mattanawcook’s Dustin Hanscom had been fouled shooting a 3-pointer three seconds earlier, and nailed all three free throws to knot the score at 51. Allen was fouled holding the ball for the last shot. Penquis had trailed by as many as nine in the third before making a 16-10 run in the fourth.

Allen finished with 13 points while Jordan Allen countered with 12 for the winners. Devin Perkins added 11.

Jon Carney led the Lynx of Lincoln with 11 points, and Tyler Libbey tallied 10. Hanscom ended up with eight.
