Late Allen free throws lift Penquis

MILO – Justin Allen converted two free throws with eight seconds remaining Thursday night, lifting Penquis to a 53-51 schoolboy basketball victory over Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.

Mattanawcook’s Dustin Hanscom had been fouled shooting a 3-pointer three seconds earlier, and nailed all three free throws to knot the score at 51.

Allen then was fouled holding the ball for the last shot. Penquis had trailed by as many as nine in the third before making a 16-10 run in the fourth.

Allen finished with 13 points while Jordan Allen contributed 12 for the winners. Devin Perkins added 11.

Jon Carney led the Lynx with 11 points and Tyler Libbey tallied 10.

At Hermon, Kyle Jones’ eight-foot baseline jumper with 17 seconds left proved to be the game-winner for the Mount Desert Island Trojans, who avenged an earlier loss to the Hawks.

Hermon missed a 10-footer with two seconds left in a game featuring four lead changes in the last two minutes.

Jake King led MDI with 18 points and Jones had 13.

Jesse Keith had 13 points while Adam Porter had 12 points and nine rebounds for Hermon. Joey Schacht and Ron Lane each scored 10 points.

At Sawyer Arena in Bangor, Ben Payson scored three goals to lead the Bangor Rams past the John Bapst Crusaders.

Mike McPike scored the other two goals for the 6-4 Rams. Nick Payson assisted on two goals while Kevin Cobb and Ryan Largay had one assist each. Tommy Daly made 24 saves on 26 shots.

Kyle Maynard and Reuben Thibodeau each had a goal for the 4-9 Crusaders of Bangor. Dave Sawyer and Jon-Paul Leibfarth each had an assist. Dan Leighton made 41 saves on 46 shots.

Stearns 4, Foxcroft 2

At Houlton, Drew Summers scored a pair of goals to lead the Minutemen to the win.

Tyler Pelkey had a goal and an assist and Aaron Doody scored a goal for 4-9 Stearns of Millinocket while Nick Simon made 34 saves on 36 shots.

Ryan McNulty and Derek Smith scored goals for 2-11 Foxcroft Academy. Jon Catell turned away 38 of 42 shots.

Girls basketball

At Mount Desert Island, Bracey Barker poured in 29 points, 14 of which came during a 28-2 second quarter spurt after the Trojans had trailed 15-11 after one.

MDI outscored Hermon 62-20 during the final three quarters.

Jessica Norwood connected on five 3-pointers for 15 points, and Shelly Gott notched 10 for MDI.

Jessie Wiggin sparked the Hawks with 11 points.
