Panthers pull away to beat Warriors

MARS HILL – Central Aroostook outscored Southern Aroostook 26-16 in the final period to turn a two-point game into an 80-68 schoolboy basketball victory Friday night.

Brian Grew and Jason Woodworth led a balanced scoring attack with 24 points each for the hosts. Andrew York tossed in 16 and Patrick Walsh netted 14.

Corey Shields sparked Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook with 23 points. Corey Edkins chipped in with 13, Wade Hersey scored 11 and Tim Hartin added 10.

At Woodland, Chad Pike nailed a 15-foot jumper as time expired off a pass from Weston Kochendoerfer to give the Dragons the win over rival Calais.

Pike had hit two free throws with 19 seconds to play to put Woodland up by one. The Blue Devils’ Russ McLean then answered by hitting a jumper with five seconds remaining.

Kochendoerfer took the inbounds pass at the top of the key and found Pike in the far corner. Pike finished with 18 points and Kochendoerfer had 14 points to go with nine rebounds. Jesse Nicholson tallied seven points, seven assists and four steals.

Josh Berube led the way for Calais with 21 points.
