The Brewer wrestling team may be small in numbers, but it is competitive. The Witches took eight wrestlers to Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class A Championships and came away with three EM champs and a fifth-place team finish.
Skowhegan won the team championship with 1851/2 points. Oxford Hills of South Paris had 135, Mt. Blue of Farmington 115, Gardiner 90, and Brewer 78. Mount Ararat of Topsham followed with 73. Nokomis of Newport had 57, Cony of Augusta 50, Morse of Bath 20, Brunswick 8, and Edward Little of Auburn 5.
Brewer’s Chris Noyes won the 152-pound championship while teammates Jeff Madden (171) and Justin Bowen (275) also picked up titles.
“The kids really did well,” Brewer coach Perry Boudreau said. “We took eight [wrestlers] with us and seven are in the state championships. The other is an alternate. It was really a good day.”
Skowhegan had eight wrestlers in the championship and came up with wins by Brandon Hamilton at 160, Chad Flannery at 189, and David Folsom in the 215-pound weight class.
Mount Ararat had winners in Ken Shaw at 103 pounds and Matt Gilley at 112. Shane Webber (119) and Seth Webber (125) of Mt. Blue won titles.
Oxford Hills’ Seth McAlister was the winner at 130 and Josh Laird won for the Vikings at 140 pounds, and Gardiner’s Iam Kozma (135) and Matt Homan (145) also picked up championships.
