Bangor police charged a local man with felony theft recently after he attempted to walk out of a Bangor Mall store with nine items of clothing.
Michael Hughes, 32, was charged with Class C theft because of previous convictions of Class C theft, Class E theft and burglary.
Around 3:45 p.m. Friday, Bangor police Officer Jason McAmbley received a complaint from J.C. Penney that an adult male had been taken into custody after being suspected of shoplifting. David Wunder, a loss prevention supervisor, told McAmbley that he had apprehended Hughes after he took eight Nike and Adidas shirts and a pair of Nike pants off sales racks and attempted to conceal them in several different shopping bags without paying for them.
When Hughes tried to leave the store, Wunder and another loss prevention employee attempted to stop the man, and, after a struggle, he was brought back to an office, the report said. When McAmbley arrived, the man was in handcuffs, the report said.
McAmbley recognized Hughes, who had been caught shoplifting at Wal-Mart a month earlier. Hughes said he had been to court on that charge and that his probation had been revoked, the report said. Hughes was scheduled to begin a sentence of 22 months on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
Hughes was arrested for felony theft and was taken to Penobscot County Jail. Hughes’ bail conditions require that he not return to J.C. Penney or the Bangor Mall. His court date is March 7.
The value of the recovered items was $224.
A threat from an unidentified male at a Brewer bank Monday afternoon prompted a search by police officials.
Around 2:30 p.m., a man walked into KeyBank on Parkway South and asked for the manager, according to report by Brewer police Officer Jeff Gotreau.
Upon speaking with the manager, the man said, “If you want to keep the power on, you have two hours to clean the sidewalk,” the report said. The bank employees didn’t know what the man meant by his statement.
The man then left the building and walked toward Wilson Street. The man was described as 5 feet 1 inch tall, wearing a tan jacket and an orange hat.
Gotreau checked the area but was unable to find anyone matching that description.
