Wassookeag School

BANGOR – Windover Art Center and the Wassookeag School have teamed up to create a mural based on photographs of the Wassookeag students. Letters made of fabric, each one unique, spell out the school’s name.

Wassookeag students, ages 6-14, helped plan and paint the 12-foot-by-17-foot mural. The mural will be unveiled at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Wellman Commons, Bangor Theological Seminary, where the Wassookeag School is housed.

DAR essay contest

BANGOR – Winners have been announced in the Daughters of the American Revolution American History Contest sponsored by Frances Dighton Williams Chapter in Bangor.

The topic for this year was: “A Letter from Valley Forge: Winter 1777-1778.”

The first-place winner for grade eight was Jonathan Pike of Corinth, a student at Bangor Christian Schools; second place, Quinn Dillon, Exeter, Dexter Middle School; third place, Matthew Mock, Bangor, Bangor Christian Schools.

The first-place winner for grade seven was Jillian French, Glenburn, Bangor Christian Schools; second, Jacob Marino, Winterport, Bangor Christian Schools; third, Allison Whitaker, Plymouth, Bangor Christian Schools.

The first-place winner for grade six was Alexandra Booker, Bradford, Bangor Christian Schools; second, Amanda Hall, Levant, Bangor Christian Schools; third Erika Thayer, Hermon, Bangor Christian Schools.

The first-place winner for grade five was Kristin Dillon, Exeter, Exeter Consolidated School; second, Andrew Vicnaire, Bangor Christian Schools; third, Philip Griffin, Levant, Bangor Christian Schools.

First-place winners will be honored during the Feb. 7 meeting of the chapter at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. Essays written by first-place winners have been entered in the state DAR American History Contest, with winners to be announced during spring conference in March. Every participant in the local contest will receive a certificate.

Colleges

Beloit College

BELOIT, Wis. – Emily Martis of Exeter is studying abroad at the Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest, Hungary, for the spring semester.

Students participating in the exchange program were urged to learn about the history of Hungary before arriving in Budapest. All of them took a half-semester course in cultural history and basic Hungarian language in preparation.

Martis, a 2000 graduate of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone, is the daughter of Christel Martis of Exeter.

Carlton College

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Jessica Rosenblatt, a junior history major, will participate in an English seminar in London. The seminar will include seeing productions at the National Theater, the Royal Shakespeare Company, a fringe theater, performance art, improvisational theater, musical theater and dance. Rosenblatt, a graduate of Bangor High School, is the daughter of Nathaniel and Leslie Rosenblatt of Bangor.

Colby College

WATERVILLE – Robert Girvan III of Kenduskeag; Brooke Harris of Hampden; Aaron Henckler of Bangor; Johann Von Hoffmann of Orono; Jennifer Leighton of Orrington; Nicolas Loukes of Glenburn; Anne Marie Sears of Bangor; Tara Studley of Veazie; and Kathleen Toole of Glenburn have been named to the fall dean’s list at Colby College.

King’s College

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – William Heckner of Glenburn has been named to the dean’s list at King’s College.

New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. – Erin Boehmer was named to the dean’s list at New England College. She is a graduate of Bangor High School.

Northeastern University

BOSTON – Kate Osler of Holden, Richard Mooney II of Hampden, Kristina Atkinson of Glenburn and Sara Lagasse of Glenburn have been named to the dean’s list at Northeastern.

Pensacola Christian College

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Julie McDonald of Corinth has been named to the dean’s list at Pensacola Christian College.

Roger Williams University

BRISTOL, R.I. – Kevin Lewis has been named to the dean’s list. A gradates of Bangor High School, he is the son of Michael Sivik and Paula Maxim-Sivik of Veazie.

St. Michael’s College

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Joshua Philbrook was named to the dean’s list at St. Michael’s College. A graduate of Hampden Academy, he is the son of Kaven Philbrook of Palmyra and Robin Philbrook of Hampden.

Stonehill College

EASTON, Mass. – Katherine Ziemer of Holden has been named to the dean’s list at Stonehill College.

University of Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Vivien Marita Spyra has been named to the dean’s list at the University of Delaware. A graduate of Bangor High School, she is the daughter of Barbara and Wolfgang Spyra of Bangor.

University of Maine

ORONO – The University of Maine music department faculty again will perform a series of recitals for the campus community and the public this winter and spring.

This year’s faculty recital series includes Spanish and South American guitar music from the last century, piano music for four hands and pieces by Eastern European composers.

All concerts will be held in Minsky Recital Hall, located in the Class of 1944 Hall, next to the Maine Center for the Arts. Admission is $6. UMaine students are admitted free with a Maine Card.

The schedule of concerts is:

. 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 – Joshua Whitehouse, trumpet, with Phillip Silver and Laura Artesani, performing a program of solo trumpet music with sonatas by Paul Hindemith and Norman Dello Joio.

. 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 – Liz Downing, flute and Phillip Silver, piano.

. 2 p.m. Feb. 16 – Richard Kenefic, featuring Spanish and South American guitar music from the past 100 years.

. 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 – Baycka Voronietsky and Phillip Silver, piano. Romantic 19th century selections.

. 2 p.m. Feb. 23 – Ludlow Hallman, baritone; Phillip Silver, piano; and Karen Pendleton, soprano, will gather to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the death of Hugo Wolf, a 19th century Austrian composer.

. 7:30 p.m. March 1 – Noreen Silver, cello; Phillip Silver, piano. A program of music by Eastern European composers.

Wells College

AURORA, N.Y. – Amanda Lescarbeau, a student at Wells College, is participating in an internship program at the Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor. She is the daughter of Norman and Janine Lescarbeau of Winterport.
