PENOBSCOT VALLEY CONFERENCE
BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Time, site: Diving 4-4:45 p.m., swimming 6 p.m., Bangor-Brewer YWCA
Teams competing: Bangor, Brewer, Caribou, Dexter, Ellsworth, Foxcroft, John Bapst, Mount Desert Island, Old Town, Orono, Presque Isle
Last year’s champion: Bangor
Teams/players to watch: Bangor: Eric Palmer (200 IM, 100 free), Chris Goldsmith (50 free, 100 free), Mike Rubin (200 free, 500 free); Old Town: Nick Perkins (50 free, 100 free), Nick Noonan (200 free, 100 fly); MDI: Justin Garver (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), Frosty Pepper (50 free, 100 free); Brewer: Mike Sighinolfi (200 free, 100 fly), Jason Littlefield (diving)
Outlook: Although they’re down a bit in size this year, the Rams have a fine combination of depth and front-line talent. Palmer is one of the top swimmers in the state. Joey Rice, John Quinn and Scott King should also provide points for Bangor. Plenty of smaller teams will showcase their top swimmers, such as Ellsworth’s Matt Jordan and Joel Alex of John Bapst.
Notes: Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for students and programs cost $1. Swimmers can still qualify for states at this meet or use the competition as a final tune-up for the big championship. Divers will do 11 dives with the first eight rounds starting at 4 p.m. and the final three dives immediately after the 50 freestyle event. Top 12 relays and individual finishers will receive ribbons and the top two teams will receive awards.
