BRUNSWICK – A landmark downtown restaurant and tavern named after Civil War hero Joshua Chamberlain was heavily damaged by fire.

Joshua’s, housed in a Maine Street building built in 1863, caught fire at 11:22 a.m. Saturday, minutes before it was scheduled to open for lunch.

No one was injured in the blaze, which apparently started in a brick chimney, according to Deputy Fire Chief Clark Labbe.

T.J. Siatras, whose family owns Joshua’s and has had a restaurant in the building for nearly 50 years, vowed to rebuild.

“We’ve been here too long not to,” said his uncle, Louis Siatras.

Joshua Chamberlain lived in Brunswick from 1856 until his death in 1914.

In 1863, he led the 20th Maine Regiment to victory in the battle of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. After the war, Chamberlain served four terms as governor of Maine and was later president of Bowdoin College.
