FAIRFIELD – A Skowhegan man died Saturday after losing control of his Jeep on a slush-filled stretch of U.S. Route 201, police said.
Sherwood Wing, 84, apparently lost control of his 1987 Jeep Wagoner while trying to pass another southbound vehicle before 9 a.m., Fairfield police Sgt. Steven Trahan told the Morning Sentinel of Waterville.
The Jeep veered into the northbound lane and collided with a Ford Taurus station wagon driven by 62-year-old Jerome Major of Oxford, according to police.
Wing, who was not wearing a seat belt, died of massive trauma at the scene, Trahan said. Major was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with broken wrists and a broken elbow. Authorities do not believe either speed or alcohol was a factor in the crash, Trahan said.
