ORONO – An unattended candle started a fire Tuesday morning in an apartment on Pleasant Street.
The candle was burning when the occupant of the apartment left for work.
Fire Capt. Henry Vaughn received the call at 11:50 a.m. He arrived at the building with six on-duty firefighters. Four off-duty firefighters also went to the scene. Once the fire was out, firefighters determined that the fire apparently had spread from the candle to a mattress, Vaughn said. One room was moderately damaged. The rest of the apartment had light smoke damage.
According to Vaughn, no one was injured, except for a firefighter who wrenched his back slipping on the ice.
