Art teacher honor

BANGOR – Stephanie Leonard on Feb. 4 received the Art Teacher of the Year 2003-2004 Award from Art in the Heart, an organization of art teachers in central Maine.

Leonard began her career in 1991 teaching privately at Art Matters in Bangor. In 1993, she joined Fairmount School staff to teach art in grades four and five. At the school, Leonard organizes the school fair and coordinates open house night for pupils. She also schedules visits from professional artists on Artists Night. She also has been art curriculum coordinator for the Bangor school system and is a key player in organizing student art exhibits at Bangor Mall.

Leonard holds a University of Maine masters degree in art education and is working toward a degree in art history.

Hampden registration

HAMPDEN – Hampden kindergarten registration for this fall will be held 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at McGraw School. Parents unable to attend can pick up registration forms at the school office 8 a.m.-2 p.m. daily.

Parents don’t need to bring their child on the day of registration, but should bring the child’s birth certificate, immunization records and a small photograph. Children must be 5 years old by Oct. 15. Pupil screening and parent orientation will be scheduled later.

Old Town registration

OLD TOWN – The Old Town School Department will hold registration for children entering kindergarten in the fall at 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at the elementary education office in the basement of Helen Hunt School, 47 South Brunswick St.

Kindergartners must be 5 years old by Oct. 15. It is not necessary to bring children to registration. Kindergarten screening will be held in May.

Parents should bring their child’s legal birth certificate and immunization records. For information, call 827-3932.

Orono registration

ORONO – Parents of children who will be 5 years old by Oct. 15 are asked to register their children for kindergarten, by appointment, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 4. A legal state birth certificate or copy of a birth record is required. A record of immunizations also is necessary. For an appointment, call 866-2151 or 866-4141 between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Winterport registration

WINTERPORT – The Leroy H. Smith School will hold kindergarten registration 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday, March 15, in the school library. Children must be 5 years old by Oct. 15 and a legal resident of Winterport to attend kindergarten in the fall.

Parents should bring their child’s legal birth certificate, immunization record and a recent photograph. For information, call 223-4282.

Bates College

LEWISTON – Lindsey Dilts of Winterport was named to the dean’s list at Bates College. A 1999 graduate of Hampden Academy, she is the daughter of George and Page Dilts.

Bentley College

WALTHAM, Mass. – Andrew Everett II of Brewer was named to the president’s list for the fall semester at Bentley College. He is a graduate of Brewer High School.

STORRS, Conn. – Kim Gilligan of Bangor has been named to the dean’s list at the University of Connecticut. She is a second-year pre-pharmacy student.

University of Maine

ORONO – Heather Corson, a UMaine student, is studying abroad for the spring semester at the Universidad de San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador. A graduate of Hampden Academy, she is the daughter is Catherine Corson of Hampden and Sheldon Corson of Liberty.

Discussion on peace, war

ORONO – The Women in the Curriculum and Women’s Studies Program at the University of Maine invites the public to attend an informal discussion to share thoughts on peace and war at 12:15-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in the Bangor Lounge, Memorial Union.

Discussion will be led by women from the community. They include: Francine Stark, Spruce Run Association; Phyllis Brazee, Peace Studies Program; Lee Sharkey, Farmington Women in Black and the International Women’s Day Rally for Peace; Ilze Petersons, Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine; and Stephanie Strong, Maine Peace Action Committee.
