Police arrested a woman in Bangor on Tuesday night for violation of a protection order.

Waynette Walters, 41, was arrested after a brief foot-chase and struggle with a police officer who had attempted to put her under arrest.

Officer Brad Hudson responded at 10:40 p.m. to a report of a violation of a protection from abuse order. He met with the man who made the complaint after confirming that there was actually a protection order in effect.

According to Hudson, the man said that Walters had called him between 9:55 and 10:00 p.m. and made several threats to him, saying she was going to “take care of him.”

Hudson then went to 66 Seventh St. to talk to Walters. He asked her if she had called the complainant that evening, Hudson said. She said she had. Walters said she was aware of the protection order, according to Hudson.

Hudson told Walters to step outside, and told her she was under arrest for violation of a protection order.

Hudson attempted to take control of Walters’ right arm, but she pulled away and ran around a truck, he said. Walters then ran across Seventh Street and onto Bowdoin Street.

Hudson pursued on foot, repeatedly telling Walters that she was under arrest, and to stop. According to Hudson, Walters swore at him and said that “you’re going to have to take out your gun and shoot me.”

Walters ran onto the porch of a house and tried to open the door, but it was locked, Hudson said. He caught up with Walters and was trying to restrain her when she started kicking him in the shins and knees.

Walters ran into a parked minivan after Hudson sprayed her in the eye with pepper spray. Hudson caught her again and placed her on the ground, at which point Officer Russell Twaddell arrived and helped Hudson handcuff Walters.

After a stop at EMMC to treat a hand injury, Walters was transported to Penobscot County Jail, where she was charged with assault and failure to submit to arrest, in addition to violation of a protection order.

Police arrested a Bangor man for operating under the influence Tuesday night.

Dennis Kaulfers, 47, was crossing the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge at around 10:30 p.m. when he was pulled over.

Officer Dan Herrick had heard on the radio that a man had left a Tyler Avenue address in a red Chevrolet Lumina and was possibly drunk.

Herrick happened to stop behind a car that matched the description at the Ohio and Hammond streets intersection, and radioed in the plate number. Dispatch confirmed that it belonged to Kaulfers.

The officer observed the car accelerate sharply as it turned onto Union Street. The car accelerated again to make it through the light at Union and Main street, which turned red just before the Lumina entered the intersection.

Herrick followed the car across the bridge and turned on his blue lights at the Brewer end. The Lumina turned into the parking lot of the Muddy Rudder restaurant and stopped.

As Herrick approached the car, he could smell alcohol and observed that Kaulfers’ eyes appeared bloodshot. Kaulfers had difficulty removing his license from his wallet.

When Herrick asked Kaulfers how much he had had to drink, Kaulfers said “just some – none.” When Herrick asked him which it was, he said none.

Herrick asked Kaulfers to step out of the car and noticed he had a difficult time doing this. Considering the single-digit temperatures, Herrick decided to arrest Kaulfers as visibly intoxicated rather than subject him to a field sobriety test.

At the police station, Herrick repeatedly offered Kaulfers the Intoxilyzer test, but he refused, threatening to head-butt the machine.

When Herrick offered the mouthpiece to blow into, Kaulfers swore into it, Herrick said. Kaulfers allegedly said that he had six previous drunken driving charges, and that he would keep driving with or without a license.

Kaulfers was transported to Penobscot County Jail and charged with operating under the influence.
