Toby Martin’s game-winning free throws may be what was remembered about Friday afternoon’s Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinal between the No. 3 Maranacook of Readfield and the No. 6 Caribou girls basketball teams, but Martin actually had two game-changing trips to the free-throw line in the contest.

Martin was fouled outside the 3-point arc with 0.5 seconds left in the second quarter and made all three shots. That cut the Vikings’ lead from 22-16 to 22-19.

“I think that being down by three instead of six was definitely a good thing,” said the poised sophomore point guard. “It helped us go out in the second half with more confidence only being down by three.”

The Black Bears, who lost in the Friday afternoon quarterfinal last year, won the game 40-38.

Time out

The Foxcroft Academy and Mount View of Thorndike boys basketball game ran a little longer than usual Friday afternoon.

With 4:13 remaining in the first quarter a foul was called. At that time the scoreboard clocks went blank and then reset to 0:00.

According to tournament director Paul Soucy a new panel had been purchased to operate the scoreboards. The new panel came with a recall chip that should have reset the scoreboards to the original time when power was lost.

However, the chip didn’t work. Following a meeting with the officials and the scorer’s table, 4:52 was put on the clock.

The game lasted 32 minutes and 39 seconds, rather than the usual 32 minutes.
