‘Jammers nip Riots; Raiders tip MDI

BANGOR – The Orono boys basketball team will be thinking about what might have been while Camden Hills will breathe a sigh of relief and move on to the Eastern Maine Class B semifinals.

Senior Jamey Davis nailed a 3-pointer with 1:23 left in overtime Saturday afternoon to give Camden Hills the lead and the top-seeded Windjammers held on to knock off eighth-seeded Orono 55-50 at the Bangor Auditorium.

Camden Hills meets fifth-seeded Winslow Wednesday night at 8:35 in one semifinal. Winslow stood up to Mount Desert Island’s fourth-quarter comeback to earn a 52-44 win in the morning session.

In the afternoon game, Orono’s Ryan Levesque tied the game with 46 seconds to go in regulation when he grabbed a missed free throw and squeezed between two Camden Hills defenders to lay the ball in.

Camden Hills’ Tim Stammen had two chances to win the game just before the buzzer. He missed a free throw with three seconds left but stole the ball off the rebound. His twisting, reverse layup at the buzzer just missed.

The Windjammers pulled out the win despite playing a little out of character. They pressed the Red Riots all over the floor, forcing 35 Orono turnovers. However, Camden Hills had 21 turnovers of its own.

“We forced a lot of turnovers, but we turned the ball over too many times ourselves. That just takes away from getting good shots and good shot selection,” Stammen said.

Stammen and Davis had 10 points each to lead the Windjammers. But Camden Hills, in addition to not taking good care of the ball, didn’t shoot it particularly well, either.

The Windjammers hit just 19 of 50 (38 percent) from the floor and only 9 of 21 (43 percent) from the foul line.

Part of their shooting problems came as a result of the presence of 6-foot-11 Orono senior John Saucier.

Saucier blocked four shots and had the Windjammers thinking twice about taking the ball to the basket. He also finished with 19 points.

Jeff Miller added 13 for the Red Riots.

“I told our kids that I was proud of them. They gave a hell of an effort,” Orono coach Randy Lee said. “Our guys stepped up and played big. Camden Hills made some big plays.”

In the morning game, the Black Raiders had carried a double-digit lead throughout much of the second and third quarters. But then Winslow had to fight off a furious fourth- quarter comeback by fourth-seeded Mount Desert Island.

The 15-4 Black Raiders led 41-31 entering the fourth quarter. However, the Trojans went on an 11-point run to start the quarter and took a 42-41 lead.

MDI senior point guard Kyle Jones nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the arc and then, with 4:09 remaining in the game, connected on a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line to give the Trojans the lead.

But sophomore Eric Lopez put an end to the run with a 3-pointer of his own for the Black Raiders. Junior Josh LaPointe followed with a nifty baseline move for a layup to push the Black Raiders’ lead to 48-44 and the Trojans appeared to be out of gas.

Lopez finished with 17 points and six steals and did an excellent job defensively on Jones, limiting him to 10 points.

“I just wanted to stay on [Jones] the whole time… I really just wanted to stay in his shirt the whole game,” Lopez said.

Nate Boutin provided Winslow with a strong inside presence and scored 16 points. Micah Grant added 10 points.

MDI coach Wilton Jones hoped his team would play better earlier in the game.

“We knew it was a pretty evenly matched game. … You know when you’re in a game against a good basketball team it’s hard to spot them 11 in points in the first half and then expect that you’re going to be able to come back all the way,” Jones said.
