BANGOR – Bangor Christian’s Josh Madden hit a 3-pointer with 1:21 left in the game to break a 55-55 tie and the Patriots went on to a 62-55 win over second-seeded Calvary Chapel of Orrington in an Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinal Monday night at the Bangor Auditorium.

Seventh-seeded Bangor Christian will play Central Aroostook of Mars Hill in the boys basketball semifinals Thursday night at 8:35.

The 16-4 Patriots appeared in control of the game against the much smaller Sabers, leading by as many as 12 entering the fourth quarter.

However, 14-4 Calvary Chapel charged back in the fourth behind Kyle Bradford, who scored six points, and the 3-point shooting of Brock Bradford who made two shots from behind the arc during the run.

Brock Bradford finished with 11 points and connected on a 3-pointer to tie the game with 2:01 left. His brother, Kyle Bradford, finished with 19 points while Tyler Dean had 11.

Madden led the Patriots with 24 points. The 6-foot-1 junior showed his toughness by going to the basket and the ability to shoot from the perimeter.

“We had a few times when we threatened to pull away with it but they had some good shooters and kept it close,” Madden said.

Ben Sobey finished with 10 points for the Patriots.

Calvary Chapel coach Ross Bradford’s Sabers made the tournament playing varsity basketball for the first time. The school only opened its doors in September 2002.

The Sabers played almost too fine of a game in the second half. With a little more than one minute remaining in the game, Calvary Chapel only had two team fouls. Trailing, they were forced to waste a lot of time foul enough times to put Bangor Christian on the foul line.

“That was the situation. But they’re real good foul shooters too. As you saw down the stretch there they made them right at the end,” the coach said.

In the morning session, the Bangor Auditorium hasn’t been good to Central Aroostook boys coach Tim Brewer. And at the end of his team’s Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinal matchup with Van Buren Monday afternoon, he was looking for a little luck in a place that hadn’t been lucky to the Panthers.

But in the end, 16-4 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill made its own luck when it perfectly executed an out-of-bounds play with 2.9 seconds remaining in the game, which resulted in Bryan Grew coming open for a 3-pointer that gave the sixth-seeded Panthers a 62-59 win over the third-seeded Crusaders.

Grew’s shot put an end to a game in which the Panthers trailed by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve had a lot of bad breaks down here,” Brewer said. “[This is my sixth year coming here] and it’s been one point every game. Last year, it went to overtime. So, I was wondering if we were going to get a break or not.”

Grew ran through a screen set by sophomore Bryan Walsh along the baseline at the entrance end of the Auditorium and grabbed a pass from Jason Woodworth.

“Woodworth threw a baseball pass to me and I just tried to get my feet under me and it went in,” Grew said.

Grew finished with 16 points, 10 coming in the fourth quarter when the Panthers were making a comeback.

York and Woodworth also had 16 points apiece for Central Aroostook.

The 18-2 Crusaders had led since taking a 3-2 lead with 5:22 remaining in the first quarter.

They rode the shoulders of 6-foot-7 junior Fabian Deuchler and the early shooting of junior Jeremy Chasse. Chasse connected on four 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with 16 points while Deuchler controlled the boards and provided inside punch.

But Deuchler, who finished with 14 points and 16 rebounds, received an elbow in the nose late in the second quarter and left the game. He returned in the third quarter but was not as effective offensively as he had been prior to the injury.

“We made turnovers in the last quarter,” Van Buren coach Steve Lapierre said. “And you can’t make turnovers like that in big games.”
