Mountain Valley, Fryeburg win GS Madawaska’s Guerrette is state champ

The Mountain Valley boys of Rumford and Fryeburg Academy girls captured giant slalom championships in Class B at Black Mountain of Maine Monday and the Maranacook of Readfield boys freestyle team also reigned in Class B.

The Mountain Valley boys edged Falmouth by one point but the Fryeburg girls cruised to a 50-point victory over runnerup Maranacook.

The Maranacook boys freestyle team triumphed by 14 points over Greely of Cumberland Center.

The best Eastern Maine finishes were the Caribou boys with their third in the freestyle; the Camden Hills girls with a fifth in the giant slalom and the Camden Hills boys with an eighth in the giant slalom.

In the boys freestyle, the Caribou boys placed three skiers in the top 20 as Russell Currier was third, Cale Dubay was 18th and Kyle Alden was 20th. John Bapst of Bangor’s Richard Collenburg was seventh and Fort Kent’s Blake Sherwood finished eighth.

Greely’s Ben True won the event.

In the girls freestyle, Fort Kent’s Kelsy Bouchard finished second behind Fryeburg’s Joanna Kinsman.

Her teammate, Olivia Cyr, was 19th. Caribou’s Erin Bougie was 15th.

In the girls giant slalom, Camden Hills’ Rebecca Twaddel finished 10th; Fort Kent’s Jana Brokane was 12th and John Bapst’s Lindsay Mullar was 20th. Fryeburg’s Amy Dyer won the event by beating teammate Jamie Allain.

In the state Class C event at Big Rock Ski Area in Mars Hill, Freeport’s Frank Roy won the boys giant slalom while Madawaska’s Kristen Guerrette triumphed in the girls giant slalom and led an impressive 1-3-4-6 performance by the Owls.

Danielle Daigle was third, Jessica Ayotte was fourth and Kaitlyn Pelletier placed sixth. Madawaska’s Kassie Levesque was 13th and Central Aroostook of Mars Hill’s Destin Larrabee was 14th.

In the boys slalom, Central Aroostook’s Josh Garrison was fourth; Madawaska’s Mathew Lavertu and Michael Arnold were fifth and sixth and Central Aroostook’s Lucas Stiles was seventh.

Madawaska’s Jonathan Cowie was 13th.
