TREMONT – The state has postponed a public hearing planned for today to consider applications for salmon-pen operations in Blue Hill Bay.

The state Department of Marine Resources said hearings on applications submitted by Erick Swanson will be rescheduled.

“It has come to our attention that a required public notice for the hearing was not submitted to the newspapers,” said Mary Costigan, DMR hearing officer. “The applicant is required by statute to submit notice to the newspapers at least 14 days prior to the public hearing, and that was not done.”

Costigan said she did not know when hearings will be rescheduled, but did not expect it to happen before May, given the department’s previously scheduled hearings.

The hearings are to consider Swanson’s applications to renew a lease on a fish farm at Hardwood Island, expand the current Hardwood Island site and to develop a new salmon farm off Tinker Island in the southern portion of the bay.

Today’s hearing had been scheduled for the Tremont Consolidated School on Route 102.
