PORTLAND – Irving Oil announced Wednesday it has sold its home heating fuel business in northern and Down East Maine to Dead River Co., one of its biggest competitors.
Included in the sale were Irving’s branch offices in Fort Kent, Caribou, Mars Hill, Houlton, Millinocket, Calais and Machias. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Andy Nixon, president of Dead River, said the sale includes all of Irving Oil’s residential heating oil, propane and kerosene business in the affected areas, as well as the installation, repair and servicing of home heating systems.
“Our roots go deep in Maine, and this acquisition strengthens our commitment to serving all areas of the state,” Nixon said.
Ned Bulmer, Irving Oil’s director of business development, said that while his company remains committed to Maine, the offices being sold no longer fit with its growth strategy. He said Irving will continue to operate its home heating business in central and southern Maine.
Bulmer said the sale would not affect the 20 to 25 Mainway convenience stores operated in northern and Down East Maine. Irving has nearly 70 Mainway convenience store locations in Maine and serves large wholesale, industrial and commercial customers throughout the state.
