BANGOR – Just think what Darius Parker might have done if he’d been feeling well.
Parker, the East Grand point guard, felt a little queasy at times Thursday afternoon during the Vikings’ Eastern Maine Class D boys basketball tournament semifinal game with Woodland.
All the junior did was score 37 points and lead a fourth-quarter comeback as the top-seeded Vikings of Danforth earned a hard fought 69-62 win over the fourth-seeded Dragons.
East Grand will play the winner of Thursday night’s semifinal between sixth-seeded Central Aroostook of Mars Hill and No. 7 Bangor Christian Saturday for the regional title at approximately 11 a.m.
East Grand and Woodland had split a pair of games with both going to overtime during the regular season. The semifinal turned in the fourth quarter when the Vikings’ 1-3-1 half-court trap began to pay dividends.
The Dragons entered the third quarter leading 32-24. They had built the lead through precise, quick passing that repeatedly beat the Vikings’ 2-3 zone for easy layup baskets. Andrew Scott scored 13 points for Woodland, all six of his baskets coming on shots from near the basket.
East Grand coach Troy Cilley changed his defense at the half.
“We had to,” Parker said. “We were down at halftime. We had to fight back. We had to do something. We picked up the pressure and went to a 1-3-1 and it worked great.”
The Vikings cut four points off the lead in the third quarter and then after Weston Kochendoerfer opened the fourth quarter with a basket to give Woodland a 49-43 lead, East Grand’s defensive intensity picked up.
The Vikings forced turnovers on four of the next five Woodland possessions and converted them into points.
The Dragons also did not help themselves when they were hit with a technical foul when they were trailing 60-59 with 1:05 remaining in the game. Parker hit two free throws for the foul called on the play and then one of the two technical foul free throws.
East Grand’s inside defensive play of sophomore Matthew Scott and junior Josh Faulkner took control of the boards which led to quick outlet passes to Parker, who converted them into fastbreak baskets.
“They’ve had trouble rebounding, boxing out,” Parker said of his teammates. “But today they did a great job. That’s how I got [the points]. They got the ball for us and we got out and ran.”
Matthew Scott had 17 points for the Vikings and Faulkner added nine.
Jesse Nicholson had 13 points for the Dragons. Chad Pike had 12 while Bill Smith and Kochendoerfer had 10 apiece.
Woodland coach Mike Look said that the game got away from the Dragons.
“Parker had a run there. We let him get a head of steam up. When he’s going fully speed he’s almost impossible stop.”
