A pioneer in Maine’s winter sporting scene died Feb 19 in Lewiston.

John A. Millar II, 85, died at a Lewiston health care facility.

Millar was a leader in organized winter sports. He was one of the founders of the Houlton Hockey Association in 1966. He also organized the Northern and Eastern Maine Hockey Association, and brought organized figure skating to Houlton.

In 1980 his commitment to the two sports was recognized in the dedication of the John A. Millar Civic Center.

Millar served on the board of directors of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.

Millar’s funeral will be at 1 p.m. today in the John A. Millar Civic Center.
