The results of the 2002 Maine Youth Drug and Alcohol Use Survey, or MYDAUS, showed that in Hancock County:
. Half of the high school seniors who participated in the study had been drinking at least once in the 30 days before the survey. One in five eighth-graders was drinking during the same period.
. A third of all 12th-graders and one in eight eighth-graders had been binge drinking (five drinks in a row) at least once in the two weeks before the survey.
. 28 percent of high school seniors had smoked cigarettes in the previous 30 days, 12 percent had used smokeless tobacco.
. Nearly one-third of high school seniors had smoked marijuana in the previous 30 days; more than 9 percent of eighth-graders had used marijuana.
. More than half of the high school students said it was very easy to obtain tobacco and marijuana, and more than a third said it was very easy to obtain alcohol.
