Recovered Stockton Springs video to be shown

Local and summer residents, as well as anyone with a connection to Hersey Retreat at Sandy Point, might want to catch this special presentation.

Louise Lilienfeld of the Stockton Springs Historical Society invites the public to attend its regular meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at the Stockton Springs town office building on Main Street.

Guests will view a videotape of a pictorial history of the Sandy Point community made in the late 1980s by former Sandy Point resident Charles Libby, who will be available to answer any questions you may have about the pictures.

Additionally, Sandy Point resident Jessica Brooks will show other pictures of old Sandy Point and Hersey Retreat, including a photograph of the early 1900s fire at the original Retreat Building.

Brooks also will exhibit prints she had made from the glass plates belonging to the historical society.

The video itself has an interesting modern-day history, Lilienfeld told me.

The historical society’s current major project is renovation of the Colcord House on Main Street in Stockton Springs as a library for the town and a new home for the historical society.

Lilienfeld said that one day, while cleaning there, she came across the video lying on a table with some books that were intended for the library.

She has no idea where the video came from, or who left it there, she said, “but, whatever, we were just delighted to find it, and also to be able to find the man who made it.

“He was very pleased to hear from us, and will be here” when the resurfaced video is shown on Sunday.

Billijo Anastasi, secretary of the Hancock Memorial American Legion Auxiliary Unit 207 in Trenton, forwarded me an e-mail she received “about this very important veterans’ meeting” that she wants to share with our readers.

Anastasi reports a public meeting to discuss the proposed termination of the Veterans Services office in Machias will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, in Room 28 of Torre Hall at the University of Maine at Machias.

Anastasi hopes veterans in Hancock and Washington counties will plan to attend.

“There are so many aging vets in this area, that to close these facilities would be devastating,” she added.

The public is invited to the Bucksport Bay Area Health & Fitness Expo from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Bucksport High School gymnasium.

The expo is the kickoff for “Move and Improve,” a fitness program sponsored by Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Featured presenters are Trish Phair of the Manchester YMCA. Formerly with the YWCA Bangor-Brewer, she is a certified group instructor, personal trainer and kickboxing instructor.

Dr. Moshe Myerowitz of Bangor will address the topic of sports nutrition.

Among the program items are older adult strength training, QiGong and Reiki, line dancing and fencing.

A complete listing of events is available at the Bucksport town office.

Kim Campbell of Eastern Maine Technical College invites you to attend a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at Rangeley Hall on Sylvan Road on the EMTC campus in Bangor.

The menu features your choice of spaghetti with meat or vegetarian sauce, salad, breads, beverages and dessert. Admission is just $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 10 and under.

Sponsored by EMTC’s National Honor Society Phi Theta Kappa, Beta Beta Omicron, a portion of the proceeds will benefit Ronald McDonald House of Bangor.

The rescheduled Orono Public Library’s second “Cures for Cabin Fever Lecture Series” is 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at the library on Goodridge Drive.

University of Maine professor Neil Comins will address “Heavenly Errors: Misconceptions About the Real Nature of the Universe.”

Annette Cooper of Otis, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, extends her appreciation to all the people who hosted and attended a recent supper for her benefit at Beech Hill School.

“I just want to express my gratitude and thanks, to each and every one of you,” she said.

“Your generosity has just been overwhelming.”
