Magee, Knights help MMA Mariners sail by Lesley

CASTINE – Levant’s Erinne Magee and Brookton’s Julia Knights each scored 18 points to help Maine Maritime Academy win the North Atlantic Conference women’s basketball quarterfinal game 77-43 over Lesley College Tuesday night.

Amanda Johnson chipped in with 11 points for the winners and Meghan Marshall netted 10.

Jamie Bean paced Lesley with 11 points.

At Gorham, Tiffany Jones tossed in 15 points to lead the Huskies to a Little East Conference tournament win.

Nicole Judkins tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds for Southern Maine and Jess Cyr added 10.

At Castine, Jed Johnson of Clinton finished with a game-high 42 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners by Castleton State College.

Matt Clement of Fairfield had 18 points and 16 rebounds as the Mariners outrebounded Castleton 49-34.

Joel Leichtman had 21 and Sean Manovill scored 16 for Castleton.

At Danbury, Conn., Marvin Evans scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Western Connecticut State downed Southern Maine in the opening round of the Little East Conference tournament.

Jay Reginatto had 18 points and Kimani Crawford added 13 for WCSU.

Jason Levecque had 28 to top the Huskies while Ryan Garland scored 23 points and Mike Francoeur had 12.

Nebraska 68, Kansas State 61

At Lincoln, Neb., Andrew Drevo scored 19 points to lead four Nebraska players in double figures Tuesday night as the Cornhuskers defeated Kansas State 68-61.

Nebraska (10-16, 2-11 Big 12) snapped a nine-game losing streak. The Huskers won for the first time since an 80-77 victory over Colorado on Jan. 18.

Kansas State (12-14, 3-10) lost its 13th straight Big 12 road game and has now lost eight of nine since defeating Nebraska 77-53 in Manhattan, Kan., on Jan. 22.

Nebraska opened the second half with a 10-0 run to break a 34-34 tie, taking a 44-34 lead on Brennon Clemmons’ steal, layup and free throw with 15:38 left.

The Wildcats responded with a 12-0 run of their own, going up 46-44 on Pervis Pasco’s dunk with 10:15 to play. Then Kansas State went cold, hitting just one basket in the next nine minutes.

Nebraska took the lead for good on a Drevo 3-pointer with 7:04 left that made the score 50-49. The Huskers went up 55-49 on Clemmons’ stumbling toss with 4:38 left. Kansas State never got closer than four down the stretch as the Wildcats missed 6 of their 16 free throws in the final 41/2 minutes.

Nate Johnson and Clemmons had 15 points apiece for the Huskers, and John Turek added 10 points and 14 rebounds.
