Egg decorating class offered in Bangor

BANGOR – A workshop on the traditional Ukrainian folk art of pysanky, a method of decorating eggs dating back to 5000 B.C., will be heldfrom 2-4 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at the Temple of the Feminine Divine, 31 Central St.

Artist Lesia Socher learned the ancient tradition from her Ukrainian mother, who practiced the art as part of Easter observances. Socher will share her knowledge and help participants complete a decorated egg using traditional tools and the wax resist process.

The custom of decorating eggs has always been associated with religious and mythical ceremonies, organizers explained. Eggs are decorated to bring fertility, prosperity and protection. Their adornment evolved with the hunter-gatherers of Eastern Europe. Since ancient times many traditions have decorated eggs, a universal symbol of rebirth, during the vernal equinox in order to help the sun gain strength. The eggs are decorated with a rich language of symbols almost endless in number and variation. Markings include images of agricultural tools such as rakes, and those representing the natural world – such as pinwheels and eight-pointed stars for the sun.

The workshop is open to all ages. The cost is $18; $8 for ages 6-10, and includes all materials. Preregistration is requested. To learn more, call Lise Herbold at 589-4344.
