Aroostook County
Benedicta 2/26: With temperatures 10 to 20 below, trails are setting up great for riding. One word of caution – do not fall off your sled, the trails are so hard that you are really going to take a beating. Trail report is as follows:
ITS 83 Sherman, Swetstone Falls: groomed, excellent conditions.
Municipal Trail 70 Benedicta, Whetstone Falls: groomed, excellent conditions.
ITS 81 Sherman, Mattawamkeag: groomed, excellent conditions.
Aroostook Report from Caribou Rec.: The weekend weather should be in the sledder’s favor, cold temps will continue to keep the base hard, however weekend traffic will break down the system in high traffic areas as temperatures get into the 20s on Saturday and Sunday so late afternoon riders should plan accordingly. This is Can Am Crown weekend (sled dog racing on the snowmobile trails) in the Fort Kent/Portage area so please take precautions as follows: Saturday between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on ITS 85 between Fort Kent and Jalbert Crossing, also on 85D on the Allagash end and the Buffalo Trail in Portage. Also Saturday and Sunday on ITS 85 between Portage and Rocky Brook.
Sunday through Tuesday watch out on ITS 92 between Two Rivers and Chamberlains and also on ITS 85 in the area of Wallagrass Stream. Trail areas are marked and sledders are asked to heed the directions of race personnel in these areas. Sledders will notice some new logging operations north of Portage on ITS 85 near the Eagle Lake turnaround, the area is signed but sledders should use caution and reduce speed. Full conditions, including events, posted on Caribou Chamber of Commerce web site or the Northern Maine Rec site.
Linneus 2/25: Trails in the Sno-Sports system continue to remain in excellent condition. The freezing rain we received on Sunday has made the trail surface very granular so use caution on the corners and give yourself plenty of time to stop.
ITS 83, Trail 7 (The Pipeline), 87, and 9 are in very good condition, will be groomed on a daily basis. All club trails 1, 2, 3, 8,10 and 61are in good condition.
Madawaska St. John Valley 2/25: We can now say we have plenty of snow after this past Sunday’s storm of about 6-8 inches with only a touch of the wet stuff to keep it all in place. The trails are in great shape throughout the loop from Madawaska to St. Francis to Portage to Washburn and on to Presque Isle. Continue to Fort Fairfield and then head north to Limestone and up along the boundary to Hamlin – continue to Van Buren and on to St. Agatha and back to Madawaska and you have completed what we call the “Wicked Good Loop” which is not for the faint of heart.
Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset
Millinocket area 2/24: We were fortunate enough to miss most of the rain in the Katahdin Region and picked up from a few wet inches of snow in town to 6 to 8 inches of powder in the higher elevations. S.
Brownville 2/26: As of Wednesday our trails are still in good shape. We could used more snow but our crew is doing an awesome job with the snow we have. Go slow on the quarry trail, rocks are showing. The railbed to K.I. is in great shape, from K.I. to Greenville is in good shape and getting groomed regularly. The trail to Beech Ridge has logging operations going on and is a little rough so go slow and be careful. The trail in Williamsburg is in great shape as is the ball park trail.
Burlington/Lowell 2/26: Trails are in good shape in our area, ITS 81 is excellent all the way from Lincoln to the Gilman Field on the Nicatous Road. We got several inches of snow on Sunday, mixed in with rain, freezing rain and sleet.
Charleston 2/26: Trail surfaces got a little thin in places with the warmer weather and a lot of traffic last weekend, but the storm Sunday and following cold weather brought things back into shape nicely. Another storm is forecast for later on this week, and conditions should stay good.
ITS 83 South of the village to the Corinth line was smoothed up pretty good, but with heavy traffic and a thinning snow cover, it may get a bit rough later in the day. The Powerline/ITS bypass and Bradford Connector trails are groomed and in good condition also. ITS 83 North is in excellent condition, and flat for the most part. The Dover/85 connector is also in good shape on the Charleston end. The Hudson connector may be rough on the far east end due to poor groomer access, but it was groomed last week and should be OK.
Parkman 2/25: Most trails have been freshly groomed early this week. Conditions continue to be very good or even nearly excellent.. Oak Hill Road trail connector to Kingsbury is available to give quick traveling west to Kingsbury, Bingham, Athens etc. Accessible through the Pease bridge trail.
Bangor area
Bucksport, Orland 2/27: All trails groomed this week. It is going to be a great weekend.
Hampden 2/27: Last weekend’s heavy rain followed by very cold temperatures all this week have made for very icy conditions. Trails are frozen and hard packed with an icy layer of thick crust on top. Be careful and slow down, the trails are icy.
Bangor: 2/26: Trails are great. The warm weather/rain of last weekend did little damage. Some ice patches – use caution.
Moosehead region
Greenville 2/28: The south-bound groomer has the new track on and is out on the ITS 85 and 87. The northbound groomer makes nightly runs to Kokadjo except on Monday when it does the Blue Ridge to the KI Road. The ITS offers great riding in both directions. Our club trails are in excellent shape.
ITS 86 below Rockwood to Greenville Jct. 2/28: Snowmobile Division rep reports that he rode the area Thursday and the trail is groomed and is in good shape.
Pittston Farm 2/26: Received 3 inches of snow/sleet over the past weekend. Light traffic and cold temps have set the trail up well. Looks like some great riding this weekend.
Rockwood Connector Trail (Jct. ST-27 outhouse to Demo Road): Excellent. Use caution on Soldiertown Ridge. Also Demo Road intersection has active logging operation, watch for equipment.
North East Carry, Seboomook Connector Trail (Pittston Farm to about 11/2 miles past Seboomook Spur Trail): Very Good. Watch for hazards that may become exposed due to traffic.
Jackman Connector Trail (Pittston Farm to Jct. ST-20 ITS 86): Excellent. Use caution in the Miller’s Crossing area as there is still some exposed ledge and rocks.
Rockwood, 2/26: Gray Ghost Camps Web site reporting that Rockwood received 4 inches of wet snow on Sunday. The snow is packed and has set up hard.
Route 201 corridor
Jackman, Moose River Area 2/27: With this cold weather back, you can bet that the trails will stay hard and flat for the next few days. The reports say it will warm up to normal for the weekend. Reports back are good although a healthy snowfall sure would be nice. There are no problems or changes to report.
ITS 86 to Pittston Farm & Rockwood: very good
ITS 89 North to Canada: very good
ITS 89 South to the Forks & Parlin: good
In town: fair to good
The Forks 2/24: Received about 3 inches of snow this weekend. We currently have anywhere from 24 to 42 inches of snow on the ground. The condition of all trail sections ranges from good to very good.
The ITS Connector Trail from Berry’s Store to ITS 87 is in good shape.
ITS 87 north to Greenville/Moosehead Lake is in very good condition, including the Power Line sections.
ITS 87 south toward Bingham is in very good shape.
The ITS Connector Trail from Berry’s Store to ITS 89 is currently in good condition.
ITS 89 southwest toward Grand Falls/Eustis is in good shape.
ITS 89 north to Coburn Mountain, Jackman has a ton of snow and super riding.
The ITS Connector Trail from Berry’s Store north to Parlin Pond and on to ITS 86 is in excellent shape.
The Enchanted Lodge Loop club trail is open and well groomed.
The Pleasant Pond Loop club trail is groomed and in very good shape.
West Forks/Durgin Hill, 2/24: At this time, all local areas have an excellent base and riding is some of the best offered this season. The snow base is great and with continued snow, we might be riding into late March.
Central Maine
Litchfield 2/28: We are still recovering from the storm last weekend, we received approximately 3 inches of snow then about an inch of ice.
Many trails have branches hanging very low but most are passable. Grooming has taken a backseat to clearing brush but by the time the weekend gets here things should be in good shape. Watch for crews on trails throughout the weekend.
Washington 2/27: Our trails are frozen hardpack but not iced over. We need a warm spell or more snow. I went for a short ride yesterday and just took life off my sliders. The trails are smooth and in great shape but need something on top.
Lisbon to Farmington Ride 2/26: From Lisbon to Farmington and back the trails were in good condition, our only complaint is that a lot of trail markings are missing, making it hard to get to where you want to go.
Manchester 2/25: Trails held up very well over the weekend. We got 2-3″ snow, followed by freezing rain. Developed quite a crust, which has broken up to a mealy surface over a hard, flat icy base. Logging in several areas, please pay attention to our signs. Conditions should be awesome for the weekend.
Rangeley area
Mexico 2/28: All trails have been groomed and are in very good condition. The corridor 17 trail about a mile out from town has a shallow brook that has overflowed and re-froze. Use caution. There is another on Rte. 66 near Half-Moon Pond. Gas and food are accessed on Corridor 17. We are 50 miles or 2 hours south of Rangeley.
ITS 89, Avon Area 2/28: Tim Russell at the Snowmobile Division/DOC advises that there is a good size logging operation in this area. Use caution.
Rangeley 2/26: Rangeley Lakes SC web site reporting that last weekend’s winter storm yielded more snow which has groomed out nicely. With the colder temps mid-week the riding is now excellent. Trail grooming continues on the regular nightly schedule.
People’s Choice Trail Closure: The People’s Choice Snowmobile Trail will be temporarily closed on Saturday March 1st from 7.
