Bouchard wins biathlon titles Fort Kent native earns 10K pursuit and 6K relay championships

Kelsy Bouchard of Fort Kent, fresh off two top-10 performances at the World Junior Biathlon Championships in Poland last month, skied and shot her way to two victories in her age division at the U.S. Biathlon National Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y., over the weekend.

Competing for the Maine Winter Sports Center, Bouchard began the competition with a second-place finish in Thursday’s youth women’s 7.5 kilometer sprint race with a time of 25 minutes, 48.1 seconds – hitting 8 of 10 targets – and never looked back.

Bouchard earned Youth Women’s National Championship titles in the 10K pursuit (37:53.3; 17 of 20 targets) on Saturday, and in the 6K individual relay on Sunday (22:30.4; 10 of 10).

Bouchard was not the only MWSC biathlete to experience success at nationals. Twin sisters Lanny and Tracy Barnes of Colorado dominated the junior women’s division. Lanny Barnes won the 7.5K sprint (23:20.4; 9 of 10), and the 6K individual relay (20:59.8; 10 of 10), and Tracy Barnes won the junior women’s 10K pursuit (35:39.8; 16 of 20). Tracy Barnes’ effort in the pursuit race placed her atop all female competitors in all age divisions in that event.

On the men’s side, teammates Brian Olsen of Vermont and Tim Burke of New York completed a MWSC sweep of the junior men’s division. Olsen won the 10K sprint (32:23.3; 6 of 10), while Burke won the 12.5K pursuit (34:43.3; 16 of 20) and the 7.5K individual relay (22:18.8; 8 of 10).

Walt Shepard of Yarmouth, who usually battles Burke at the top of junior men’s division but is instead battling an illness and was able to compete in only one race at Nationals, finishing sixth in the 10K sprint (35:05.3; 7 of 10).

Fort Kent’s Blake Sherwood, competing in the youth men’s category, had his best finish in the 7.5K individual relay on Sunday, finishing third (24:14.5; 10 of 10).
