Bangor Garden Show volunteers must sign up

The phrase “Calling all volunteers!” is right on the mark for the 13th annual Bangor Garden Show, reports chairwoman Cindy Stockford.

Every single person who ever volunteered for the garden show, as well as everyone who wants to become a garden show volunteer, must register for this year’s show.

“We have a computer issue, and we are starting all over again, collecting our volunteer names for our database,” Stockford explained.

“So we are going to have a general sign-up, during regular mall hours, on Saturday, March 8, at the Bangor Mall.”

Stockford said representatives of the Bangor Garden Show will have a booth as part of the “Destination Maine, Maritimes and More” Travel and Tourism Show at the mall, “where we will be signing up volunteers who stop by.”

Information and volunteer job descriptions will be available at the booth, and Stockford emphasized how critical it is for everyone, “even if you have volunteered before,” to sign up, because your name is not part of the Bangor Garden Show register.

However, if you are unable to come to the Bangor Mall on Saturday, you do have other registering options.

“If people are unable to make it, they can call Keep Bangor Beautiful, at 990-1201, and they will be entered in our register,” Stockford said.

Hundreds of you have volunteered in the past, and Bangor Garden Show organizers certainly want you to return!

While we’re on the subject of garden shows, there still is an opportunity for you to attend the New England Spring Flower Show in Boston on Tuesday, March 18.

Marion Syversen of Hampden has written to report, “our bus is not full,” so the Bangor Garden Club is reissuing an invitation for you to enjoy “The Garden Journey,” produced by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.

Tickets for the excursion are $60 each, “and only a few seats remain,” Syversen wrote. The price includes transportation and entry into the show, but not meals.

The bus departs at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, from Broadway Shopping Center in Bangor, and returns at approximately 9 p.m. to that location.

Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare will be the beneficiary of proceeds from the Eastern Maine Healthcare Mall’s third annual Indoor Miniature Golf Tournament.

Cheryl Dawes reports “tee times” for the event are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at the Eastern Maine Healthcare Mall on Union Street in Bangor.

“Carpet fees are $15 for teams of three, with teams going off at eight-minute intervals,” Dawes said.

In order to play, however, you need to call 973-6700 to reserve your tee time. All participants will receive an official Affiliated Healthcare Systems golf ball, and you will be provided a putter to use during the tournament.

Prizes will be awarded to the team with the lowest overall score as well as the low male and low female scorers. And, Dawes added, “young golfers are welcome to participate.”

So if you’re thinking spring and looking for a way to practice putting, here’s an opportunity to do that while helping raise funds to support the work of CMN.

On behalf of the Penobscot County Bar Association, lawyer Marie Hansen invites all high school seniors or equivalents who reside in Penobscot County to enter the Law Day Essay Contest. The first-place scholarship award is $500 with $250 awarded for second place, $100 for third place and two $50 scholarships for honorable mentions.

The theme of this year’s contest is “Celebrate Your Freedom – Independent Courts Protect Our Liberties.”

The 500-word essays must be typed and double-spaced, and your entry must include your name, address, phone number, high school and principal or equivalent, your age and certification as a 12th-grade student.

All essays must be postmarked no later than Friday, April 11, and mailed to Law Day Essay Contest, Penobscot County Bar Association, c/o Marie Hansen, P.O. Box 924, Bangor 04402-0924.

The winners will be announced on Law Day, Thursday, May 1.
