In a pickle

Peter Piper may have picked a peck of pickled peppers, but whether or not he knew what to do with them is another story. If you have a great salad recipe that includes pickles, pickled peppers or sauerkraut, you could be in luck. Pickle Packers International, a trade association for the pickled vegetable industry, is holding a “Favorite Family Salad” recipe contest. To enter, send your favorite recipe in one of five salad categories – chicken, tuna, macaroni, egg and green – to: Recipe Contest, 1209 IH 35 South, #207, New Braunfels, TX 78103 or enter online at www.ilovepickles.org. Entries must be received by March 31, and the winning entrant in each category will receive a year’s supply of pickled vegetables – way more than Peter Piper ever imagined picking.

Wine and Dine

In the mood for tapas and a toast? Head to Cleonice Mediterranean Bistro in Ellsworth for its Spanish wine dinner on Tuesday, March 11. The event begins with tapas and Cava, a sparkling wine, in the bar at 6 p.m. Seating for the five-course dinner, paired with six wines, begins at 6:30. Among the featured selections is a 1994 Reserva Rioja and a Pedro Jimenez sherry. For information or reservations, call 664-7554.

Vintage Victuals

Ashland’s Union Congregational Church will turn back the clock for its 17th annual Old Fashioned Supper on Saturday, March 22. Guests will dine by lamplight on a homemade buffet of roast turkey, baked ham, casseroles, baked beans, jellied salad, potato salad, coleslaw, brown bread, rolls and a variety of pies. Waitresses will dress in costume, and an old-fashioned country band will play throughout the evening. Reservations are recommended as there will be only one seating, at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $10 and are available by calling 435-2070.
