Camden Hills basketball player Stephanie McIntyre is a self-proclaimed country girl, so she took that into consideration when picking a college to attend next year.
Rather than head to a school in more populous southern Maine, the 6-foot-1 senior center said she’d rather play in a smaller atmosphere. And for McIntyre, Husson College in Bangor is small enough.
McIntyre, who lives in Hope – a town of about 1,300 whose students attend the high school in Rockport – and is an avid hunter, said Husson’s nursing program was another attraction.
“I’d prefer Bangor over Portland,” McIntyre said. “… [Husson’s nursing program] is better and I’m hoping to have more one-on-one communication with my teachers.”
She was also looking at the University of Southern Maine, where she said she would have played basketball, and was accepted to the University of Maine in Orono and the University of New England in Biddeford.
McIntyre said she recently had a chance to tour the Husson campus and was there with Skowhegan High senior guard Carmen Ballard.
McIntyre said coach Harold Williams watched her play several times this year.
“He thinks I can fit in at the college level,” she said.
McIntyre was a starter for the Windjammers this year and averaged about seven points and six rebounds per game. She scored nine points in Camden Hills’ Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinal loss to Hermon last month.
McIntyre joins another former midcoast high school standout at Husson – former Searsport player Holly Gracie, who was recently named the Sunrise Conference Rookie of the Year.
Marshall picks up honor
McAuley of Portland’s Sarah Marshall, who was named a Miss Maine Basketball finalist Wednesday, was also recently named a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America honorable mention.
Marshall, the Lions’ 5-7 senior point guard, is headed to Boston College next year on a full basketball scholarship. She was a first-team All-Maine selection last season.
McAuley is the defending Class A state champion and will play Portland in a Western Maine Class A semifinal tonight. The No. 1 Lions are 18-1 this year.
The top 20 high school girls named to the WBCA’s All-America list will play in a college-style regulation game April 4 at Georgia Tech’s Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
The All-America squad was selected by a committee of WBCA-member high school coaches who represent nine geographical districts from across the country.
