Hot Shot winners

OLD TOWN – Old Town Parks and Recreation Department was host of the annual Maine Recreation Parks Association Hot Shot Competition on Feb. 22 at Old Town High School.

The MRPA Hot Shot competition is a basketball skills contest for youths ages 9 to 18. The competition involves shooting from five “hot spots” marked at one end of the court. The competition tests each participant’s speed, shooting, dribbling and rebounding abilities.

The event’s participants qualified at one of the five regional competitions held earlier in the month.

Bangor area Maine State Hot Shot award winner is Cody Veilleux of Hermon and runner-up is Kyle Savage of Bangor.

Relay for Life

OLD TOWN – Why will hundreds of people stay up all night, walk in circles around a track, laugh, cry and have a great time? For the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, a 24-hour event to celebrate survivorship and raise funds for cancer research, education, advocacy and service programs.

It’s time to register for Old Town’s Relay For Life event that will take place 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Old Town High School. To register, call the American Cancer Society at 989-0332.

During Relay For Life, teams from local businesses, schools, churches and families join together for friendship, food, fun, music, entertainment, a night under the stars – all while team members take turns walking or running on a track.

It’s a family-oriented event where teams collect donations and can win individual and team prizes for their efforts. Relay For Life features a cancer Survivors Walk and reception to celebrate life, and the evening’s Luminaria Ceremony memorializes those who have been lost to cancer and honors those who are fighting or have conquered the disease.

“The atmosphere of Relay For Life is one of camaraderie and celebration,” said Mike Hart of the American Cancer Society. “This event provides an opportunity for cancer survivors to pass the torch of hope on to those still battling cancer or those who might be touched by it in the future. Funds raised enable the American Cancer Society to continue its fight against cancer.”

Information about how to register, form a team or volunteer in Relay For Life is available from the American Cancer Society at 989-0332. Sponsors of Relay For Life include: WVII-TV, Z-107, ZF Lemforder, Georgia Pacific, Adelphia, Dead River, Hannaford and Sam’s Club.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
