AUGUSTA – Internal Revenue Service volunteers are offering free assistance with basic tax returns to people at sites throughout Maine.

Taxpayers with low to moderate incomes, the elderly and disabled or non-English-speaking people qualify for help. Many sites also offer free electronic filing.

People who plan to visit a site must bring their 2002 tax package, Form 1099 bank interest and dividend statement, a copy of last year’s tax return and Social Security numbers for anyone listed on the tax return.

For the nearest volunteer site, call the IRS at (800) 829-1040, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the filing season.
