Kenduskeag Stream Bridge to be revamped

BANGOR – The Maine Department of Transportation announced Friday a $2.7 million, three-month rehabilitation of the Kenduskeag Stream Bridge.

The structure spans the Kenduskeag Stream on Interstate 95 near Bangor International Airport and Husson College.

From March 31 through June 20, a mile-long section of I-95 between Exit 46 and Exit 48 will be reduced to two lanes – one lane southbound and one lane northbound. A concrete barrier will separate the two lanes.

Traffic on Valley Avenue, the two-lane road that runs under the north side of the bridge, will be reduced to one lane starting in mid-March running through mid-October.

CPM Constructors won the contract, with a bid of $2,699,866 and a project timetable of 92 days. They will be working 20 hours a day, six days a week.

Repairs to the bridge include replacing the concrete abutment backwalls, the bridge surface and membrane, and support bearings, as well as replacing the median bridge rail.

This partial shutdown will give workers space for a staging area under the north end of the bridge. They will also be fixing erosion problems between Valley Avenue and Kenduskeag Stream, as well as repairing deteriorating concrete on the bridge. In order to repair concrete directly over the single traffic lane, Valley Avenue will be completely closed for a few nights during the summer.

The walkway by the stream will be closed for a single 12-hour period at night in order to install a new culvert.
