ATLANTA – The University of Maine baseball team saw its three-game win streak snapped at the same time Georgia State ended its four-game losing streak here Monday.

The Panthers scored two runs in the fifth on a one-out RBI groundout by Mike Buchanan and a two-out RBI double to right center by Dustin Phillips that proved to be the winning and insurance runs for a 4-3 verdict.

Phillips also hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. The other run for the 8-8 Panthers came courtesy of a Sean Fitzgerald RBI groundout, which scored Justin Newman after he led off the inning with a double. Romas Hicks notched the win with five innings of five-hit, two-run ball.

Maine, now 3-1, scored single runs in the first, third and ninth innings. The first run came via a two-out, bases-loaded passed ball. The Black Bears took a 2-0 lead on Brett Ouellette’s one-out RBI double to right center. Maine cut the deficit to one run with one out in the ninth on a solo homer by Mike Livulpi, who went 3-for-5. Scott Boatman then relieved Braden Staranchuk and sandwiched a groundout and flyout around a walk to end Maine’s threat and notch his second save.

Ryan Harris (0-1) took the loss, scattering seven hits over eight innings and allowing three walks while striking out four batters.

Wittenberg sweeps Saint Joseph’s

At Fort Myers, Fla., the Wittenberg Tigers swept a doubleheader with Saint Joseph’s College with a 9-7 victory in the opening game and a 14-1 win over the winless Monks in the second.

In the first game, Ryan Born went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to help lead the Tigers to the come-from-behind win. Matt Foster doubled and singled to drive in two runs.

Derek McIntosh and Jessie LaCasse helped pace the 0-4 Monks with two hits apiece. LaCasse hit a two-run homer and McIntosh drove in one run.

In the second game, Born went 5-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs to lead the rout for Wittenberg. Brandon Godzik had a double, two singles, and an RBI. Matt Oberdorfer had two singles and three RBIs. Tom Fox pitched five innings of two-hit ball for the win.

For Saint Joseph’s, Andy Exley, Rich Desautels and Howard Rutherford each hit a single. Desautels drove in the lone run.

Monks earn split

At Cape Coral, Fla., the St. Joseph’s Monks of Standish notched a sweep by virtue of a win over Salem State, 8-4 in the nightcap. St. Joe’s dropped a 5-2 decision to Rockford in the opener.

In the second game, Helene Liaci went 3-for-3 with four RBIs for the winners.

Courtney Sirois knocked out three hits and drove in two runs for St. Joseph’s, and Casey Cook knocked in a run. Darcy Lee went 3-for-4.

In the first game, Jen Seipts had a pair of RBIs to spark Rockford.

Casey Cook drove in two runs to lead the Monks.

Husson, Marywood split

At Fort Pierce, Fla., Husson spilt a pair of games with Marywood University, falling in the opener 17-10 before prevailing in the nightcap 14-6.

In the second game, Erin Weston laced three hits as the Braves capitalized on six Marywood errors.

Sara Agouab recorded a single and a triple, and Stacey Akerman had a single plus a double.

In the first game, Lacy Natyshal singled twice and Lieberthal doubled to lead Marywood.

Kerri Tuck laced three singles to lead Husson, while Kelly McHatten and Rhonda Chambers had two singles apiece.

Mariners drop two

At Fort Pierce, Fla., Maine Maritime Academy dropped a pair of games, 12-1 to St. Thomas Acquaillas and 9-1 to Washington U.

In the first game, Alanna DePrencis, Christine DiBenneditto and Meghan Leavey had three singles apiece for the winners.

Jackie McKenney rapped a single and a double to lead the Mariners.

In the second game, Jessica Blauerman ripped two singles and knocked in three runs to lead Washington.

Janice Spear doubled for Maine Maritime of Castine.
