MDI Sharks capture boys YMCA state title Long Reach Swim Club wins overall crown

The Mount Desert Island YMCA Sharks scored 1,150 points to win the boys’ portion of the YMCA state championship meet Saturday and Sunday at Wallace Pool in Orono.

Long Reach Swim Club, which represents the Bath Area YMCA, won the overall title with 2,079 points and scored 999 to win the girls’ side.

Pine Tree Swim Club of the Greater Portland YMCA was second in the overall and girls meets and third in the boys meet.

The Sharks were third overall (1,7371/2).

MDI got big points out of its youngsters.

In the 8-and-under age group, a team of Ross Johnston, Joseph Kief, Seth Vandergrift and Brody Bowden won the 8-100-yard medley relay. Benjamin Walls was first in the 100 individual medley, second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 25 butterfly. Jack Harrison won the 25 breaststroke and was third in the 25 free.

Jason Carbone took first place in then 25 backstroke. MDI teams were second and third in the 100 free relay.

Ian Carbone led the Sharks’ 10-and-under crew. He was first in the 100 IM and second in the 100 free. MDI was fifth in the 200 medley relay and Andre Stevens-Rosa came in fifth in the 100 free.

In the 12-and-under group, Patrick Breen was fifth in the 100 free. The Sharks finished fifth in the 200 medley relay and third in the 200 free relay.

Frank Carbone had a strong meet for the 14-and-unders. He led off a 200 medley relay that finished first and was third in the 200 free, fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 100 back. Sargent Pepper had a fine meet as well, swimming the anchor leg of a winning 200 free relay along with Joshua Radford, Kevin Staples and Sam Burne. Pepper also finished second in the 50 free and fifth in the 100 free.

Justin Garver paced the 15-and-over group with a fourth in the 200 IM and a fifth in the 100 breaststroke.
