Panthers stifle Black Bears 5-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman’s John Gragg struck out 13 to lead the Panthers to a 5-1 victory over the Maine Black Bears at Jackie Robinson Field Tuesday night

It was Maine’s second straight loss after winning its first three.

Gragg allowed only five hits and walked two. Maine’s run was unearned.

Junior Mike Collar (Scarborough) took the loss for the Black Bears, striking out eight and giving up three earned runs in seven innings.

Bethune Cookman scored two in the first inning as leadoff batter Brad Frick doubled down the left-field line and scored off a one-out double by Gragg. Gragg scored off a single by third baseman Carlos Garcia.

The Wildcats added another run in the fifth off a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.

The Black Bears did not score until eighth inning when they loaded the bases and capitalized on a Bethune-Cookman error that scored senior Jesse Carlton. Junior Simon Williams (Portland) came across the plate when a throw to first went wild, but a call of runner interference away from the plate negated the run.

Carlton and classmate Mike Livulpi singled twice for the Bears.
