A Brewer Public Works employee found drug paraphernalia in a handbag lying in the snow Tuesday afternoon.

The bag held two or three hypodermic needles, and a spoon with burn marks and a white residue on it, Brewer police Officer Jeff Gotreau said.

Police disposed of the materials, Gotreau said.

While needles often are associated with heroin, Gotreau said that pills also can be dissolved and taken intravenously.

Hypodermic syringes also were reported found at a Bangor gas station Sunday evening.

An employee at the Citgo station at the intersection of Hogan Road and Stillwater Avenue called Bangor police just before 6 p.m.

He said a customer had purchased a lighter and went to the restroom, where he stayed for half an hour.

Officer Edward Mercier said that the employee found six syringes in the restroom along with a soda can with burned resin on it.

The can tested positive for amphetamines, Mercier said.

The customer denied knowing anything about the needles or the can. Police are considering the case inactive.
