Creek lifts Bears past Wildcats for 4th victory

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore righthander Greg Creek turned in a strong performance to help the Maine Black Bears beat the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 8-3 in baseball action at Jackie Robinson Stadium Wednesday night.

“I think Greg Creek came of age tonight,” Maine coach Paul Kostacopoulos said. “This is a very good team, we’d lost two in a row and he comes out and gives us six strong like that. It’s his second win of the trip and we’re five days in.”

Creek, a former standout at Maranacook High School in Readfield, scattered four hits in six innings while striking out five and walking four.

The Bears supported Creek with a seven-run fourth inning, highlighted by Jesse Carlton’s three-run home run.

Bethune-Cookman had a 1-0 lead entering the fourth as Wildcat pitcher Michael Turchon had retired nine straight UMaine batters.

However, he hit Aaron Young with a pitch to start the fourth and walked the next two batters to set up an RBI single by Aaron Izaryk.

Brett Ouellette followed with a two-run single. Izaryk also scored on the play when a throw to third went high into left field.

Mike Livulpi then drew a walk and Carlton followed with his homer to left center.

Kostacopoulos was pleased Maine was able to rebound for the victory after it lost to the Wildcats Tuesday night.

“We’ve struggled [at the plate]. Last night we scored one run and they threw another lefty tonight, but we kind of lost it.

“We got a couple clutch hits in a row and Aaron getting a hit with the bases loaded gave us a lift,” Kostacopoulos added. “Then Brett singled and Jesse hit a three-run homer to break it open.”

The Black Bears added another run in the fifth on Izaryk’s sacrifice fly.
