Alton registration
ALTON – Kindergarten registration for children who will be 5 years old by Oct. 15 will be held Thursday, April 3, at Argyle Elementary School, Argyle Drive, off Route 16.
Parents must bring their child’s official birth certificate and immunization records. Call 394-2331 for an appointment. It is very important that all pupils who will be entering kindergarten in the fall be accounted for.
Chess tournament
ORONO – For the second consecutive year, the Bangor High School chess team, led by coach Jonathan Dearing, took first place in the state chess championships.
Members of the winning team were Stephen Wong, Tom Jones, Byron Oakes, Will Owens and Brian Chick.
Four other teams, fielded by John Bapst Memorial High School of Bangor, the Maine School of Science and Mathematics of Limestone, Deer Isle-Stonington and George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill, tied at 3-0.
The John Bapst team took second place after a subsequent tiebreaker, with 27 points to the magnet school’s 25 points.
Members of the No. 2 team, led by coach Scott Burgess, were Ray Solinger, Eoin O’Connor, Jordan Trundy, Colin Campbell and Conor Campbell.
Will Owens of Bangor was the top unrated player. In the reserve section, Bapst’s Zachery Twitchell and Nicholas Borelli were both undefeated.
Teams from Orono High School and Old Town High School also competed at the championship level.
Fred Irons of Orono was the tournament director.
The individual championships, for youngsters in kindergarten through grade 12, will be held March 29 at the University of Maine.
Bangor High School
BANGOR – Mary Molnar, a student at Bangor High School, will attend the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program March 15-22, in Washington, D.C. Presidential Classroom, the leader in civic education, provides selected high school juniors and seniors unprecedented access to leaders who shape America’s public policy.
During the weeklong program, PC scholars interact with Washington insiders, including members of Congress, presidential appointees, senior military officials, top business leaders and journalists. Students observe the U.S. Congress in action, visit congressional offices and debate current issues with peers from the United States and abroad. They also visit the renowned sites of the nation’s capital such as the White House, the U.S. Department of State and Arlington National Cemetery. Additional highlights include a Central Intelligence Agency briefing, a mock presidential election and foreign embassy visits.
Bradley registration
BRADLEY – Kindergarten registration and screening will be held Friday, April 11, at Viola Rand School for children who will be 5 by Oct. 15.
Parents should call 827-2508 to schedule an appointment. They must bring birth certificate and immunization records.
Current kindergarten pupils will not attend school on April 11.
Brewer High School
AUGUSTA – The Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at the University of Maine at Augusta will present a joint concert featuring the UMA Jazz On Tour Ensemble, directed by Steve Grover; and the Brewer High School Jazz Band, directed by Brady Harris. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. March 20, in Jewett Hall Auditorium, University of Maine, Augusta.
Director Brady Harris of Brewer High School is an alumnus of the UMA music program. The Brewer High School Jazz Ensemble was one of the top bands in its division at the State High School Jazz Festival last March.

Etna-Dixmont registration
ETNA – Families of children who will be registering for kindergarten or pre- kindergarten in Etna or Dixmont should call Carol Graves at the Etna-Dixmont school at 234-2491 or 269-2361 by March 14. Children entering kindergarten should be 5 years old on or before Oct 15, and children entering prekindergarten should be 4 years old on or before Oct 15.
Pendleton Street School
BREWER – Pendleton Street School received a $500 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Program. The grant was presented to Gary Gonyar, principal of Capri Street School and Pendleton Street School, by Kevin Forrest, a sales engineer for MobilExxon. Leon Grant, manager of Brewer Mobil, an RH Foster store, helped the school obtain the grant, which will be used to help pay for risers in the cafeteria.
The school received a second $500 grant from the ExxonMobil Foundation Matching Gift Program, presented to Gonyar by Madeline Forrest. It, too, will go toward helping to pay for the risers.
Capri Street School
BREWER – Kindergarten pupils at Capri Street School conducted a penny drive as a Community of Caring project to benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They raised $217.15. The drive concluded on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and coincided with the 100th day of school. Classroom activities integrated lessons about pennies, the number 100 and Presidents Day.
Skills USA-VICA
BANGOR – The annual Skills USA-VICA competition will be held March 14 at Penobscot Job Corps and United Technologies Center in Bangor.
Students from vocational programs, high schools and colleges throughout the state will take part in competitions ranging from culinary to electrical skills.
The competitions will be judged by people who are professionals in their fields.
American Spirit Team
BANGOR – The American Spirit Award Team at United Technologies Center has been working to promote technical education.
The team, which began last year as Maine’s first competitor for state and national recognition of the Skills USA-VICA competition, placed sixth nationally in 2002.
Current members of the team are Daniel Davis, Paul Andrews, Michelle Stratton and Mike Biolotta, advised by Valerie Clapp.
Some two-thirds of Maine employers are having difficulty finding skilled workers, the team points out. One in five is forced to recruit out of state.
In addition, jobs requiring an associate degree or higher are increasing nearly twice as fast as jobs requiring lower skills.
Maine’s technical colleges offer all academic credentials available at community colleges, team members said, and more than 240 career programs are available statewide.

WORCESTER, Mass. – Kiel McDougall of Bangor and Catherine Rohn of Brewer have been named to second honors on the Clark University dean’s list.
EMTC
BANGOR – Eastern Maine Technical College inducted 44 students into the Beta Beta Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, Feb. 26. The honors topic for the event was “Dimensions and Directions of Health: Choices in the Maze.” Sister Mary Norberta, president and chief executive officer of St. Joseph Hospital, was the keynote speaker.
Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is open only to students who have a 3.5 grade point average.
Sister Norberta challenged attendees to do something healthy each day.
“Set a resolution for yourself,” she said. “Keep stress to a minimum by taking five minutes each day to relax. Keep your heart well.”

Onward Program
ORONO – The University of Maine’s Onward Program will offer an open house 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. March 27, at the Onward Building on Flagstaff Road, between Murray Hall and Jenness Hall. Brief presentations will be held on the half-hour, leaving plenty of time to partake of light refreshments, to ask questions and to get to know more about the Onward Program.
The open house will be repeated April 24, at the same times and place. Prospective students and others interested are welcome to attend a session on either day.

Teaching workshops
ORONO – Future teachers will have the chance to work with some top educators, as well as hear experiences and advice from novice teachers, during a series of workshops at the University of Maine on Saturday, March 29.
The third annual Mathematics and Science Future Teachers Club Spring Conference is designed to attract aspiring teachers, especially in the critical shortage areas of math and science, and to provide highly relevant instructional strategies and a realistic view of the classroom.
