Hough, Picard power UMaine

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A seven-run inning wasn’t good enough.

So the University of Maine’s baseball team put up a 10-spot.

The Black Bears squandered a 7-0 lead but broke a 9-9 tie with a 10-run sixth-inning rally that provided them with a 20-9 victory over Long Island University Friday.

Maine, which tied a school record with seven doubles, is now 6-2 while LIU fell to 1-4. Maine will play Iowa on Saturday and Sunday.

Mike Ferriggi’s two-run double and Joe Hough’s two-run single keyed the decisive rally along with Brett Ouellette’s RBI double and run-scoring singles by Alain Picard and Ryan Quintal.

The Bears also received five walks in the inning, including four to open the frame.

Meanwhile, freshman Sam Warner overcame his disastrous first inning to hold the Blackbirds to one run over the next four innings in picking up the win.

“He was much more composed after the first inning,” said Maine sophomore catcher Aaron Izaryk. “He left the ball up in the first inning but kept it down after that and got some ground balls and a couple of strikeouts.”

Izaryk also said Warner’s curve and changeup “weren’t working for him in the first inning” but they eventually came around and complemented his fastball, which he spotted better after the first.

Troy Martin pitched three shutout innings in relief and Quintal pitched a scoreless ninth.

Hough and Picard paced Maine’s 16-hit attack with three hits apiece. Hough drove in four runs and Picard knocked in three. Izaryk also delivered three runs with a fielder’s choice, a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk.

Ouellette, Aaron Young and Mark Reichley had two hits apiece.

Maine had 17 hits in Thursday’s 14-4 triumph over LIU.

Izaryk said the Bears have taken coach Paul Kostacopoulos’ advice and made the most of their time during batting practice and in the batting cages.

“He told us to bear down and practice properly because that will carry into games,” said Izaryk.
