UMaine softball splits over weekend Black Bears rally with Sunday sweep

OSCEOLA, Fla. – Sunday was much better than Saturday for the Maine softball team as the Black Bears beat both Colgate (5-2) and Rider (9-2) Sunday afternoon in softball action.

On Saturday, Maine dropped a pair of games: 6-3 to Army in the opener and 6-1 to Bucknell in the nightcap.

The Bears are now 7-4.

On Sunday, Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Jess Brady of Jackman singled to left and then scored on a Brittany Cheney triple. Cheney then scored on the throw home.

Nikki Taylor’s RBI single in the fourth made it 3-0 Maine. Jenna Merchant pitched a five-hitter and struck out eight batters to improve to 4-2. Taylor had three hits and an RBI.

In the second game, Maine scored three runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to take an insurmountable lead.

Dana Grimm went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Lindsay Tibbetts of Berwick had two singles and three RBIs. Sarah Bennis (2-1) of Pownal scattered eight hits and notched five strikeouts for the win.

In Saturday’s first game, the Cadets took an early lead with a six-run third inning.

Brittany Cheney went 3-for-3 for the Black Bears and Molly McKinney added a pair of hits.

In Saturday’s second game, the Bison held the Bears to just one run.

McKinney doubled in Jess Brady for Maine’s lone run, Lauren Dulkis hit two singles and Amanda Stevens had a single.

Johns Hopkins sweeps Monks

At Cape Coral, Fla., Friday, the St. Joseph’s Monks were swept by Johns Hopkins, 9-5 in the first game and 4-0 in the second.

In the first game, Jesse LaCasse and Ben Muniz each had a homer for St. Joe’s of Standish. Muniz also drove in four runs.

In the second game, the Monks were held to just one hit, a single by Muniz.

At Lake Wales, Fla., Edison Denizard and Cesar Yepez each doubled and knocked in three runs as Warner Southern prevailed Saturday.

Tony Schafer whacked a pair of homers and plated three runs for the winners.

Tony LaPrino doubled twice and brought in two runs for the Braves and Craig Harvey notched two singles and three RBIs.
