Maine’s Collar shines Bears top Fordham for eighth victory

NEW SMYRNA, Fla. – Mike Collar of Scarborough pitched eight innings of four-hit ball Monday and was backed by a 12-hit attack as the University of Maine baseball team posted a 7-1 victory over Fordham at the New Smyrna Complex.

Collar, a junior righthander, struck out eight and walked one while improving to 1-1 this season. Freshman Brett Rogers pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out three, to preserve the win.

The Black Bears, now 8-3, supported Collar with another errorless defensive performance. UMaine, which has committed only four errors in its first 11 games, also turned three double plays.

UMaine and Fordham play a single game today at 11 a.m. in Daytona Beach.

Senior designated hitter Alain Picard paced the offense Monday with two doubles and a single good for three RBIs. Jesse Carlton singled twice with an RBI while leadoff man Mike Livulpi and freshman shortstop Steve Gambale posted two singles each.

Joe Drapeau of Biddeford belted his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning.

Kevin Brush’s solo homer with two out in the sixth was the only scoring for 1-6 Fordham.

UMaine took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when two errors led to an unearned run. The Bears scored three times in the fourth off Rams starter Rob Semerano.

Livulpi led off with a single to left field, then Gambale beat out an infield single. One out later, the runners moved up on a passed ball, setting up Picard’s two-run double down the line in right.

Picard then stole third and scored when the throw went into left field.

UMaine added a run in the sixth on Drapeau’s homer, then tacked on two in the ninth when Brett Ouellette walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Picard’s double to left-center.

UMaine left 19 runners on base.
