Greenville gets $5,000 state grant for gateway signs

GREENVILLE – The Department of Transportation has awarded Greenville a $5,000 gateway grant to construct two informational signs.

The grant funds will be added to thousands of dollars of pledged materials and labor for the proposed signs in Greenville Junction and on Route 15. The Greenville Junction sign will be similar to the one at the base of Indian Hill. The other will be a smaller “mountainscape” sign depicting the mountains in the distance and identifying the peaks.

“We’re very pleased the MDOT has funded our grant request this year,” Greenville Town Manager John Simko said Thursday. “More than a dozen individuals, businesses and organizations have worked together to design this project; we at the town of Greenville look forward to working with each of them to construct these displays and to better welcome visitors to our community,” he said. The Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce, the Greenville High School industrial arts department, and local business and industry assisted the town with the project.

Anyone who wants to contribute to this project is encouraged to contact Simko at 695-2261. Construction is expected to begin in April and be completed by the end of June.
