Brady, Bennis lead Bears to 10th win

ORLANDO, Fla. – Jessica Brady’s three-run double in the second inning powered the University of Maine softball team to a 5-2 victory over Central Florida Saturday in college action.

Sarah Bennis (4-2) and Jennifer Merchant combined on the win, with Merchant pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

UMaine took a 3-0 lead in the second on a walk, an error, Sara Asadoorian’s infield single, and Brady’s two-out double to center field.

Brittany Cheney led the Bears with an RBI double and two singles. Asadoorian singled twice and scored two runs.

Lindy Oakley singled twice for Central Florida.

Southern Maine takes two

At Fort Myers, Fla., the Huskies scored five runs in the seventh inning to come back and defeat St. Lawrence University 5-3 in USM’s first game Saturday. USM edged Suffolk 1-0 in the second game.

In the first game, Caterina Riitano hit a two-run homer to tie the game for Southern Maine. Angela Cote hit a double with two RBIs.

Heather Tuttle and April Regonlinski each hit a solo home run for St. Lawrence.

In the second game, Kristi Steward hit a single into right to knock in a run for the Huskies. Melissa Henderson allowed only two hits and struck out five.

Erin Pagel and Kristen Wisdom were the only hitters for Suffolk with a single apiece.

At Fort Myers, Fla., Jill Van Wychen hit a pair of singles while knocking in a run for Winsconsin-Stevens Point Friday night.

Jenny Feidt singled to knock in a run for the Pointers.

Kristi Steward hit a pair of doubles for Southern Maine. Renee Heath had a double and a single.

Becker takes two from MMA

At Castine, Brooke Robichaud had three hits and scored three runs to help Becker College outscore Maine Martime Academy 9-4 in Game 1. Becker won the second game 6-0.

In the first game, Kim Santangelo had a double and a single, three RBIs, and scored a run for Becker and Lindsey Mallett scored a run with two hits.

Elise Bishop, Abbi Darling, and Amanda Wells all scored a run and had a single for Maine Maritime of Castine.

In the second game, Rebecca Marks had a single and two RBIs in Becker’s win.

Wells had two singles for the Mariners.

At Fort Myers, Fla., Brady Endl walked with the bases loaded to force in the winning run as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater beat the University of Southern Maine Sunday.

Endl hit a triple and a double and had three RBIs for the Warhawks, and Travis Van Zile had three singles with three RBIs.

Andy Lang, Brandon Brewer, and Pat McDonough each hit a single with a pair of RBIs for Southern Maine. Drew Palmer and Colin Loveless each had RBI singles.
