MCDONALD'S ALL-STAR BASKETBALL

East C-D team wins on Patterson basket West A-B stars cruise due to height edge

BANGOR – For the first time in 62 games, Dexter’s Travis Patterson was held under 10 points in a basketball game. But two of his eight points turned out to be the biggest of the game.

Patterson’s 12-foot jumper with six seconds remaining in the game Saturday afternoon gave the East boys team a 76-75 win over the West in the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Stars Class C-D game.

The West would extract revenge in the Class A-B matchup later in the day with an 87-59 thumping of the East.

But it was Patterson who brought the large crowd at Husson College’s Newman Gymnasium to a roar with his play in the first game.

Kyle Yarborough of Hall-Dale in Hallowell had given the West a 75-72 lead with just more than a minute remaining in the game. Corey Shields of Southern Aroostook in Dyer Brook, who was a strong presence around the basket for the East throughout the game, cut the lead to one with a putback of a missed shot.

The East then regained possession of the ball and Patterson swung around off a pick and took the ball from a teammate.

“I wanted the ball there,” Patterson said. “I’ve made that shot a lot.”

A lot. The 6-foot guard scored more than 1,500 points in his high school career. But he said he had never won a game with a shot.

This time he did. Patterson, who had awed the crowd with his ballhandling throughout the game, up-faked from behind the 3-point line and beat his man. He pulled up on the right side and his shot went off the back of the rim. It bounced up as high as the top of the backboard before falling back down and through the basket.

At this point, what had been a casual, laid-back affair became a little more intense. The West had the ball with six seconds left and the length of the floor to go. The East committed a foul after the West inbounded the ball, forcing the West to inbound the ball again. The West was unable to get a good look at the basket at the end.

“It’s all fun and games the first two quarters,” Patterson said. “But once it gets to the fourth quarter, we wanted to win the game.”

Richard Mulligan of Penobscot Valley in Howland, who will be attending Husson, scored 14 points to lead the East. Jamey Polk of Sumner in East Sullivan had 12, and Shields finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Winthrop’s Joel Weisberger topped the West with 17 points. Kinsey Durgin of Telstar in Bethel had 15 and Josh Armandi of Jay scored 11.

In the A-B boys game, the West scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter and used its superior size to dominate the East.

Thornton Academy of Saco’s Sean Mayo at 6-6 and 6-5 Jeff Holmes of Cheverus in Portland ran roughshod over the smaller East squad.

Holmes had 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor while Mayo scored 16 on 7-of-12 from the floor, including a couple of resounding dunks. He also grabbed 10 rebounds.

For Holmes, who will attend Bentley College, the win was a small measure of revenge. It came one week after Cheverus lost to Bangor in overtime in the Class A state championship game.

“It’s just a fun weekend, hanging out with all the real good basketball players from the state. But we definitely wanted to win this game. The East has won the past few state championships, so this is good,” Holmes said.

The West was also bolstered by the smooth play of Westbrook’s Jason Hight. The 6-2 guard scored 15 points on a variety of jumpers and moves to the basket. Deering of Portland’s Patrick Conway had 12 points for the West.

Nokomis of Newport’s Ryan McLellan had 18 points to lead the East. Drew Pelletier of Brunswick and Jac Arbour of Cony in Augusta had 11 points apiece.

The East’s problem, in addition to its inability to contain Holmes and Mayo, was its poor shooting. The East hit on only 23 of 62 shots, including 8-of-31 from 3-point range.
