AUGUSTA – Gov. John Baldacci has signed a bill requiring bottlers to clearly disclose on their labels the source of water they sell.
The new law will require labels to spell out the name and geographic location of the water source, without using abbreviations or acronyms. The measure is an expansion of a labeling law enacted two years ago.
Some companies spell out on their labels the exact source of their water, while others use only initials or disclose nothing at all.
Bottlers’ and distributors’ groups opposed the legislation, saying it’s pre-empted by federal law.
