AUGUSTA – Nearly 100 representatives from Maine’s credit unions will be at the State House today for the seventh annual Maine Credit Union Day. The event, sponsored by the Maine Credit Union League, will be held 8 a.m. to noon in the Hall of Flags.

Highlights of the day will include an address by Gov. John Baldacci and a joint resolution by the Maine House and Senate recognizing Maine’s credit unions for their contributions to the communities they serve.

Maine is one of the strongest credit union states in the country, with nearly one out of every two residents belonging to a credit union.

“Maintaining and building strong relationships with our elected officials helps to ensure that the best interests of Maine consumers are served,” said John Murphy, president of the Maine Credit Union League

As of Dec. 31, 2002, statistics reflect that the trade association for the state’s 76 affiliated credit unions have total assets of $3.26 billion and serve 582,329 members.
