BANGOR – More than 100 members of the Maine Army National Guard’s 112th Medical Company (Air Ambulance) are scheduled to leave for the Middle East on Friday.

An estimated 120 members of the unit left Bangor Feb. 13 for their mobilization base in Fort Drum, N.Y., home of the 10th Mountain Division, Light Infantry. The unit has been awaiting deployment orders for a theater of operations.

On Wednesday, a National Guard spokesman, Maj. Peter Rogers, confirmed that the unit is scheduled to leave Friday for the Central Command area of operations. He could not confirm exactly where the unit will be based. The Central Command oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East and central Asia.

The 1136th Transportation Company, which left Maine Feb. 25, is still awaiting deployment orders at Fort Dix, N.J., Rogers said. Members of the Air National Guard’s 265th Combat Communications Squadron left last month for Kuwait, where they were expected to spend 90 days installing and operating communication systems to support patrol of the southern no-fly zone in Iraq, The Associated Press reported last month.

About 200 members of the Maine Air National Guard’s 101st Air Refueling Wing have been activated and are serving in Bangor, Rogers said.

In addition, the 152nd Maintenance Company out of Augusta and Bangor, along with troops borrowed from the 133rd Engineering Company of Skowhegan, have been put on alert. The 152nd’s mission involves maintaining and operating heavy trucks, forklifts and field generators.
