Picard powers Maine past URI

KINGSTON, R.I. – Alain Picard’s two-run double keyed a five-run, two-out rally in the ninth inning as the University of Maine baseball team beat Rhode Island 6-2 Friday.

Maine entered the ninth inning trailing 2-1 before putting together the comeback.

Adam Labelle came in for an inning’s work in the eighth in relief of starter Greg Norton to earn his second win of the year.

Rhode Island starter Jad Prachniak limited the Black Bears to just three hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Joe Drapeau, Ryan Quintal and Mike Livulpi all reached in front of Picard who drove in Drapeau and Quintal with a double down the right-field line.

Aaron Izaryk then singled, driving in Livulpi and Picard to give Maine a 4-2 lead. Brett Ouellette followed with a double to left center driving in Izaryk with the final run.

At Norton, Mass., Brett Edmunds hit a two-run double in the third inning to widen Wheaton College’s lead over the University of Southern Maine.

Paul Tedesco had a RBI single in the first for Southern Maine and Tyler Delorme knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice.

Maine drops two

At Ithaca, N.Y., Sandra Alvarez scored in the fourth inning off of a Melissa Heintz single to give Cornell University a 2-0 win over Maine Friday. The Black Bears fell to Boston College by the same score Thursday.

Brittany Cheney and Lauren Dulkis each hit a pair of singles for the University of Maine.

On Thursday at Chestnut Hill, Mass., three pitchers combined to one-hit the Black Bears.

Cheney doubled for UMaine’s only hit.

Colby College sweeps

At Fort Myers, Fla., Shannon Emerson had two hits and scored two runs to give Colby College a 3-0 win over Lawrence and a sweep of a doubleheader.

In the first game, Lauren Olmsted had Colby’s only hit with a pinch-hit single in the seventh inning. Carrie Morin scored two runs in Colby’s 3-2 win over Thomas College.

In the second game, Olmstead pitched a shutout while striking out three and allowing only one walk for Colby. Wendy Bonner had three RBIs and had a double and a single.
