Ferriggi, Picard power UMaine Bears record Saturday sweep

WESTBURY, N.Y. – Mike Ferriggi and Alain Picard slammed three-run homers and Brett Ouellette had a pair of home runs and four runs batted in Saturday as the University of Maine baseball team improved to 12-6 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of New York Tech.

The Black Bears won the opener 11-8, then took the second game 11-7.

Sunday’s scheduled doubleheader with New York Tech was cancelled due to rain.

In the first game, the Black Bears opened up an 11-3 lead and then held off New York Tech for the win.

Maine scored six runs in the fifth inning when Ferriggi drove in Greg Creek and Aaron Young with a home run to center field.

Ouellette followed with his second home run of the day. Ouellette had homered in the fourth inning, driving in Mike Livulpi. Ouellette also doubled in the game.

Ryan Quintal was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for the Black Bears.

Mike MacDonald scattered seven hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out 11, to earn the win and even his record at 2-2. Adam Labelle got the last out of the game to end a New York Tech comeback attempt and picked up the save.

In the second game, Maine fell behind 3-0 before mounting a comeback en route to a win.

Picard’s three-run homer to center in the fifth inning gave the Black Bears a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish.

Picard drove in Steve Gambale, who had reached with a single, and Young, who was hit by a pitch.

Joe Drapeau had a two-run homer in the fourth inning, driving in Aaron Izaryk, who had reached on a walk.

Maine scored four more runs in the sixth playing “small ball.”

Drapeau singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Quintal walked and Drapeau moved up to third base on another wild pitch. Creek drove in Drapeau with a single to center.

Joe Hough pinch ran for Creek, then Gambale singled to left, scoring Quintal. Ouellette followed with a single to left that plated Hough and Gambale scored on a Picard sacrifice fly.

Maine added a pair of runs in the seventh inning on a Gambale single to put the game away.

Mike Collar pitched a complete game, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs while striking out seven. He evened his record at 2-2.
