Police probe convenience store theft

Two men reportedly stole more than $250 in cash from an Orono convenience store Sunday night.

About 11 p.m. Officer Scott Lajoie went to the Big Apple store on Main Street in response to a theft complaint.

According to the report, two men entered the store just after the clerk began his shift, while he was confirming the contents of the cash-out bag.

One of the men distracted the clerk. While he was at one end of the counter, the other man reached over and grabbed the bag of cash, the report said.

The clerk did not notice the missing bag until the men left.

Lajoie said the case is under investigation.

A Bangor man received a summons for making a false report Sunday night after filing an auto theft complaint.

Adam Whitney, 22, told Bangor police Officer Christopher Desmond his 1989 Jeep Cherokee was missing from his cousin’s driveway, where he had left it unlocked with the keys in it. Whitney said he left the residence at noon with his mother and returned with her at 7:45 p.m.

A neighbor told Desmond he saw Whitney drive away in the Jeep at 3 p.m., Desmond said.

At 10 p.m. Desmond heard from Maine State Trooper Mark Coleman that a Jeep matching the missing vehicle’s description was in a rollover in Monroe, and that a man matching Whitney’s description was seen walking away from the scene.

Coleman told Desmond that Whitney was warned on March 6 not to drive an unregistered, uninsured vehicle.

Desmond summoned Whitney for giving a false report. Desmond said Whitney submitted a written statement reaffirming his original account.

Old Town police arrested a man after responding to a 911 hang-up call Sunday night.

Officer Bob Pelletier and Sgt. Michael Hashey arrived at the Kirkland Road address to find 31-year-old Christopher Chaisson on the back porch.

Chaisson explained he struck his wife after a verbal argument turned into a shoving match, the report said.

Hashey found blood on the floor, the report said. The kitchen phone cord was disconnected. Chaisson explained he stopped his wife’s 911 call so he could talk with her about the consequences of calling the police, the report said.

Chaisson’s wife had a cut above her eye, the report said. Three children were in the house when the fight occurred.

The officers arrested Chaisson for domestic assault and obstruction of the report of a crime.
